Here are key positional criteria for a lock from which you can draw performance indicators:

Technical

• Catch with soft hands and be sympathetic when delivering the ball
• Drive the front row into engagement and maintain forward pressure

Tactical

• Move to create space and outmanoeuvre opponents in lineouts
• Contribute appropriately in achieving the wheel when necessary
• In attack, understand role in open play as a ball carrier, support player or decoy
• In defence, be aware of role in team's defensive strategy

Mental

• Relish the mental challenge of being part of a dominant scrum

Physical

• Be aggressive with use of arms and hands to claim the ball
• Maintain a powerful driving position in the scrum
• Explosive jumping ability from a standing start
